Using Ollas with Soluble Fertilisers
Gore Research Pty Ltd manufacture a range of ollas which are suitable for use with soluble fertilisers such as Thrive, Aquasol or hydroponics nutrient.
Ollas that are made on spinning pottery wheels are generally not suitable for use with soluble fertilisers as the sculptor must use extra water to be able to attain the shape he/she wants. This extra wetness closes up many of the pores of the clay, making it unsuitable for use with soluble fertilisers.
Our Oasis Ollas are made from semi-wet Italian clay by being pressed into shape in a hydraulic ram. This ensures consistency of the clay's thickness, along with ensuring that tens of thousands on "small air cells" remain in the clay. These "small air cells" are the secret to using ollas successfully with soluble fertilisers. The clay is fired in an oven at a lower temperature than that used for traditional ceramics. This ensures that only partial fusing of the clay occurs, thereby leaving a porous medium that works fantastically year-after-year with soluble fertilisers.
